10 Reasons to Get Some Sun

While it’s true that the sun can have a damaging effect on skin if not managed properly, we sometimes forget that the sun also has a slew of pretty amazing health benefits as well.

Below are 10 reasons to get outside and (safely) soak up some healing rays.

Sleep better.

The Sun sets our circadian rhythms, regulating serotonin and melatonin. Getting just one hour of sunlight in the morning will help you sleep better at night.

Maintain strong bones.

Getting vitamin D from sunlight is crucial for healthy bones and teeth. This means fewer injuries and faster recoveries as we age. In addition to strengthening our bones and teeth it also helps prevent serious and debilitating conditions such as osteoporosis.

Improve mental health.

Sunlight is an antidote to depression. Vitamin D levels are directly linked to depression. Being in the sun makes us happier. Sunlight is even used to treat more serious mental health conditions such as ADHD, bipolar depression and eating disorders.

Lose weight.

Sunlight decreases the risk of “metabolic syndrome,” which includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar and excess body fat.

Build immunity.

Our immune systems require vitamin D to function properly. Sunlight is both antibacterial and antiviral. Maintaining adequate levels of natural vitamin D (sunlight) can boost our immune systems and protect us from viruses and bacteria.

Increase longevity.

Studies suggest that it is possible to increase longevity by spending time in the sun.

Improved cardiovascular.

Sunlight naturally lowers blood pressure, which is good for overall cardiovascular health.

Improve skin.

A little sunlight glow’s a long way. See what we did there? Sun exposure is especially good at improving skin texture by healing inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne.

Increase energy.

Sunlight increases energy because it stimulates our brain to be alert. People tend to have more energy in the sunny months of the year.

Reduce disease.

Absorbing sunlight has been found to reduce some cancers through the increase in natural vitamin D.
